Dakota

Built in the late 1880s, the Dakota was one of the first luxury apartment buildings in New York, and it remains among the city’s most desirable—and iconic—addresses. In the new book The Dakota: A History of the World’s Best-Known Apartment Building (Princeton Architectural Press, $55), architectural historian Andrew Alpern explores the past of the grand structure, offering rare photographs, close-ups of its intricate ornamentation, and even composite floor plans for all ten stories. The book also gives a peek into the apartments of some of its most famous residents over the years—though it skips “the juicy tales and tabloid gossip,” keeping the focus on the Dakota’s influence on the housing culture and landscape of New York City. Over the years, the Dakota has been home to such celebrities as Lauren Bacall, Leonard Bernstein, Boris Karloff, and John Lennon and Yoko Ono, and it notoriously served as the exteriors of the cursed Bramford Building in the 1968 film Rosemary’s Baby.

  • Celebrities such as Madonna, Gene Simmons, Billy Joel, Cher, Carly Simon, Alex Rodriguez, Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas have all been turned away by the building’s selective board. But, many other famous folks did make the cut. In no particular order, here’s a look at some iconic celebrities who have lived at the Dakota: John Lennon.

As of late 2021, Ono is 88-years-old and still living in the same apartment building, The Dakota, where John was assassinated outside.

The building had zero vacancies for 45 years after it opened.

The residences at 378 West End Avenue respect and perfect the Upper West Side’s residential vernacular. Designed for the way people live today, each of the fifty-eight one- to six-bedroom condominiums is elevated with gracious proportions and rich materiality. There is a welcoming interplay between the classic and contemporary, with most residences featuring direct elevator access with private landings and formal foyers leading to gracious great rooms. Top-of-the-line technology includes building water and air filtration systems, and elevators outfitted with state-of-the-art touchless technology.

Green Spaces Near Residencies:

The West Side’s expansive Riverside Park is just a stone’s throw away from 378 West End Avenue — it’s the perfect destination for a quiet moment. Designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, this park offers its own array of recreational facilities and is landscaped with elm trees, dramatic slopes, and sweeping shoreline views.

One of the most iconic spots for relaxation and recreation in the world — Central Park. You can find fitness activities there throughout the season. The park is home to a host of sports facilities, including basketball courts near the Great Lawn and North Meadow Recreation Center and volleyball courts at the Great Lawn and Sheep Meadow. Boat rentals are available for a scenic afternoon paddling around the Bethesda Terrace and Bow Bridge, and also for adventures on the Lake. Or, if you prefer to do your boating from dry land, there are radio- and wind-powered model boats available for steering across Conservatory Water at the Kerbs Boathouse.
